New Zealand Reds

Origins

The New Zealand Red actually originated in the United States and was bred in California around 1910 as a commercial breed for the meat and fur trade. It is unknown which breeds of rabbit were used but the name is thought to stem from imported wild New Zealand rabbits. It is likely that the colour is derived from the Belgian Hare and that the Flemish Giant also had an influence.

Appearance:

The New Zealand Red is a large rabbit with an average weight of 3-4.5kg (6½ - 10 lbs).

New Zealand Reds have a medium build; the body is fairly broad with a slightly arched back, the head shapely with full cheeks and upright ears.

New Zealand rabbits have medium-length hair that feels coarser and less soft than most breeds.

Red (a golden-red or deep russet colour)

Temperament:

New Zealand Reds are calm, easy-going and friendly rabbits. They are usually good with children and other pets, very relaxed about being handled and rarely aggressive.
